SCRATCH-OFF

Tara E Sheffer

Mandolin is having a bad day: she’s late for work, overdrafted her bank account pumping gas, and her car needs an oil change. Her relationship with her daughter is nonexistent at best because she’s working overnights as a home health aid for Mrs. Cathy, a cantankerous memory-care patient. Diane, her boss, refuses to advance her paycheck…again. It’s embarrassing. But Mandolin’s day takes an unexpected turn when she pops open the trash can and finds…a discarded winning scratch-off lottery ticket.
